DESIGN FORUM – Surfer Mag

SURFER MAG just did a little interview of yours truly about all things Soft Top:) Check it out here.

Design Forum: The Merits of a Proper Soft-Top with Jack Coleman

Heres a few of my favorite fin set-ups:)

TOM MOREY is a huge part of what has brought joy to so many people with his bodyboard design, as well as also inventing the soft top. He is in bad health, and really facing some tough times. Mike Stewart has launched a fundraiser to help him in his final phase of life on earth. This really struck a chord with me. We all owe Tom so much. I donated and it really made me feel like it was money well spent. We love you Tom and thank you for all you have done for us ocean lovers.

OCC Cast – Rasta

The surf world is filled with many charactors that make our sporty life both adventurous and inspirational. There are few of these people that really struck a chord with me through my surfing journey, and id have to say, that David Rastovich would have to be at the top of that list (currently tied with TC).

His surfing is both etherial and technical, making the act of riding waves almost look effortless. Its nice to hear him speak whenever an interview pops up on the web, I just hang on every word he says as if he is some sort of aquatic demi-god.

Occ has a special connection with him so I felt this interview was really sweet and to the point. Check out the latest occ cast with the Goat Wizard himself David Rastovich:) Favorite surfer of all time.

Now  –   lets dance on roller skates!

James Brown of wrestling  . . . . .   The Nature Boy. Dig in.

Thalia Surf Shop

Did a little short featuring stylists Alex Knost & Justin Adams down in south OC for my mates at THalia Surf🙂 THe shop has some really sweet boards on the racks in there, including some shaped by Al “Brown Microwave Television”. If you ever get a chance to check the shop, give it a look in central Laguna Beach.

BROTHERLY LOVE – Mollusk Surf Shop

IVe known the Prairies now for over 10 years now, from around town and in the water. Tanner has always been one of our best, most reliable shapers in the area and you can just about see him in the lineup everyday rain or shine. Levi and I have had a long history of doing projects together dating back to his days in his band i used to do music vids for called “Gantez Warrior”. This short just kinda fell into my lap when i was shooting around town & realized that these brothers are a very unique pair that would be fun to document.

They’ve recently started theyre own surf club called, Costa Mesa Surf Club, along with a new board label “DASH”, where Tanner whips up some traditional shapes. Its a place where all their friends can meet and hang in between surfs, quite a fun little environment for all the CM boyz. These brothers truly do love eachother, which is rare for a competitive duo such as they:) I felt like this short sums up both of their surfing styles, and overall personality traits. Levi did all the soundtrack, and Tanner shaped all the boards:) Such a fun shoot and fun short to put together, I thought a comedy narrative was exactly how i should present these two. Think it worked out . . . .  enjoy – Brotherly Love.

Thank you once again MOLLUSK for the kind words and platform:

Our friendly, Southern California neighbor Jack Coleman has had a curious and watchful eye on a unique, family duo. Tanner & Levi Prairie are a brother, surfer, shaper, musician pair based out of Costa Mesa, CA. The two are a sight for sore eyes in the contemporary world of macho-freakout wave riding, drawing experimental, highly polished lines on anything from knee high crumblers, to double overhead pits. Open your mind, and tap yourself into a tasty dose of Brotherly Love.

RIP – Drag

Wow, just watched this all the way through, DRAGGING KILLS~! Hilarious antics and death defying action, best Boog flick ive seen in a while. Harry Bryant air transfers around 8min mark are incredible!! Love the local salty old mate banter montage around the 22min mark as well. Couple songs were a little off, but all together worth a watch:) Its crazy how barreled bodyboarders get, still gettn no respect. Well, im throwin it out – RESPECT Drag.

Been havin fun on a paipo lately : )        ~

Coupla more vids i liked from zeWeb. First one is a George Trimm short – profiling Newport Beach Stylist Grant Noble. Second is a AROUND TOWN episode put out by STAB, nice home town auzzie feel to it featuring Ry Craike.

Mehx

Got a few 35mm shots from a trip a few months back – shooting for the new movie & 88 with Asher & Hendo down in mainland mex – thought id throw up. Seems like years ago already to me, crazy how time moves in slow motion when starting up a new project.

Finally a descent sized swell expected to hit here in California this weekend. After a month and a half of very sub-par surf we all are starting to get a little “Hedgy”. Apparently, this was the worst September on record for us in Cali, and i agree:( Hope this October makes up for it and we all get alotta water time before winter starts to kick in. Lack of swell has given me alotta time to start getting the movie really organized as it starts to come alive.

BLISSS Mag ZONE FREQUENCY

Got a couple words & photos in this months October BLISSS MAgazine going over all things NEW MOVIE. ThanKs guys for being such legends and putting out some great publishing throughout the years! HEres the layout.

The words from the story here:)

Two years in the world of Surfing can sometimes seem like light years, the time flies, and innovations in board design and performance keep pushing surfing to new heights. In all of my years, there really hasn’t been one where surfing hasn’t grown in popularity, surfing is everywhere and continues to grow. I love this time in surf film making history, lots of people really gobbling up the imagery, with lots of different filmmakers to choose from. I hope to keep independent film making relevant in this new age of web shorts & 1 minute Instagram clips. I still feel that there is just too much love for sitting down with some friends for a half hour and watching a surf flick! It will always be a sought after visual experience, surf film making will never die!

In the span of two years I have figured out you can get a lot done in that time, enough to create a feature length surf film that sticks. Its been a little over a year since my last film “THE ZONE surf movie” came out in July of 2016. THE ZONE was by far the most fun I’ve had making a movie since I started in 2009, so I immediately started shooting the follow up. That is where I am at now. I realized that I was actually starting to live out my dream of chasing swells while shooting some of the worlds best, and seeing far away cultures as I was doing it. It’s always exciting when a new film project starts to get going, the soundtrack starts to take shape, and the cast members start to get on board for trips and shooting.

Making movies for me is almost all about the surfers that are featured in it. All the cast that will be in the upcoming film, named ‘ZONE FREQUENCY’, are pretty much my favorite surfers and humans on the planet. Surfers like Ryan Burch, Bryce Young, Ozzie Wright, Robin Kegel, Derrick Disney, and Ari Browne will be a few of the usual names in the cast. Really excited to add some new cast members to the film as well. Mason Ho, Asher Pacey, Wade Goodall, & possibly Gavin Beschen are just a few to be determined as fresh faces for the new flick. I think showcasing these cultural surfers are the recipe for another exciting movie that everyone can get behind.

I feel like when I’m making a film it’s not just for this time period, it’s more for when I’m dead and gone. I want my movies to have substance with a long shelf life, a documentation of this particular time period in alternative surfing. Look for this movie to be much of the same as the last, an extension of the formula I’ve grown comfortable with presenting. It’s simple – just my favorite surfers – riding some interesting boards – in some world-class waves – to some nice music. Movie should be ready for release July-Oct of 2018.
