Groovy is out, RAd is in.

Surf film short for Warriors of Radness, http://www.warriorsofradness.com/.  IT was all pretty much shot right around 56th street in Newport Beach, Ca.

The guy who gets naked was on some serious drugs and had to be detained by 12 police officers after he literally threw 3 of them off as they tried to handcuff him. After they knew they were dealing with someserious shit – they shot him with a stungun and tazed him as well – my film ran out right when this occured :( SO bummed when that roll ran out on me! Thought i got the shot of him getting tazed  but turned out the film gods were not with me.

ANdrew Doheny wins VQS COntest!

So stoked for Droid who took home 10k and a new Harley Davidson this weekend at the 54th street Volcom contest! I was down there all week and Andrew rarely showed his face down on the sand, only for his heats, and he quietly surfed his way to the final where he took down all the competition. Most notably, Aaron Cormican who was ripping all week and was my contest MVP.

Andrew is clearly above most of the guys his age & his powerful surfing is way beyond his years on the planet. His style and approach remind me of a young Martin Potter siiiiiiiiiiiiik.

Was so excited and amped for the win, to see it happen and all come together was a buzz!

winning!

chippa’s winning photo!

HEre is a tintype I was lucky to get 10 minutes before the VQS airshow final. It is an image of Austrailian surf airialist Chippa Wilson. Chippa was skateboarding in the front of the house and I knew i had my 4×5 and asked him for a quick sitting right before his heat where HE pocketed $2000, a new surfboard, and some serious swag. We celebrated by drinkin some aged scotch on the rocks after the contest wrapup. Congrats Chippa you earned it!

The Growlers – “Gay Thoughts”

The initial name of the song was “Bad THoughts”, it was about the struggles of temptation while being on tour. After changing bad to gay Brooks decided that he liked it better, that is how the song was born!

Brooks came up with the story of a man who writes a letter to his lover telling her he has these strange feelings, when it turns out, she is a lesbian. The kicker was the whole vibe was to be based around the Mexican culture and the bizarre underworld of latino transexuals, as well as a spiritual crow that delivers his message of such great importance.

The Tranny scenes were shot in Los Angeles at what turns out a birthday party for one of the performers! They even let me film in the dressing room, and accepted this strange gringo running around shooting film.  All the horse riding and Jesus scene, as well as the intro of Brooks with his pet cow, were actually shot in Northern Baja, in Mexico. We tried to recreated the LA bar scene as best we could and shot the performance of the band in their Costa Mesa Studio.

15 rolls of super8 film were shot for the film and it took a good solid month for everything to be shot and edited. Thats not counting the month of planning and bouncing of ideas as to how we can bring this odd song to life with film.Enjoy. Get-gay !
