HAPPY BEACH will be showing at this film festival this week!
Episode 4 is out and now playing on http://www.korduroy.tv/shows . It features Ford Archbold, and it is my favorite section in the HAPPY BEACH film.
Today i was awoken by Mr. Knost promptly at 7:15am, he called to say he was surfing. I was quite tired up on an edit til 4 in the morning so on only a few hours sleep i motivated and went down to Blackies. The day started out a bit slow with a marine layer, then the sun started to pop out, a city truck got stuck under the Newport Pier, and people started to line the beaches. Alex was there with his surf crew Jared Mell and Tanner Prairie. They switched boards, and Jared rode a board finless and was spinning around all over the place. I was able to film from the pier which is pretty rare so I was frothing on the filming, it was kinda fun and the waves picked up, felt alot like the POLYESTER project, same energy at the beach.
AL was mostly riding a 4’10 twin fin that he now is tearing on. After a nice roll of film of waves, i shot some digitals in between for promotion of an upcoming show in Japan. We then went to the shaping shack, where i shot another roll of film to add with the surf footage. Its gonna be a small film short for that Japan show in July. Later we even worked on the RVCA AL Knost line film and talked about a trip to BALI that im pretty sure we are going on in a couple weeks. Nice productive day with Mr. Knost.
HEre is the last of the Warren Smith photos we took a couple weeks back. Shot them with my 4×5 & there is no after effects with the images. Its a secret how it was shot, & was a test shoot for Warren’s RAEN glasses that are called the Squire, http://www.raenoptics.com/
I am currently on a photo documentary binge. Richard Avedon.
Diane Arbus.
My two favorite things. Wes Anderson & Bill Murray wohhhhh!! Coming out really soon.
In case you didnt know, Ford Archbold is out for a couple months due to an ankle brake that he sustained in Mexico 3 weeks ago. It happened on a Surfing Mag trip and everyone that was there was saying Ford was ripping on the first day just lapping everybody, than the injury occured early the second day of the trip. Ford was ripping so haRD the first day that he still got a bunch of shots and footage before the injury occured. He said it was an overhead wave that compressed him and kinda shattered his back right foot.
So i wanted to get a picture of him on his new best friends, his crutches. Its classic to see Ford’s style really show when he is on the aluminum arm extenders. So I had 1 4×5 polaroid left i saved for this shot, but there was no plate for my tripod. I then set a focus on the back put in the film and hand held my 4×5 to get this shot of Ford getting in Jared Mell’s van right before goin on a roadtrip/Tomorrows Tulips show in Santa Barbara. The suitcase in the lower righthand corner was a handmade gift from Alex Knost to Ford for his 21st birthday few months back, Its says, “FOrd is Cool”. Ford didnt want it in the shot but i tricked him into keeping it in there. The composition is way off and i somehow didnt frame Ford’s shoes and boot, he had on some red converse that really tied his outfit together i thought. All in all, the shot is okay, hand held 4×5 is not a highly advised method of photography. I really wanna get another shot before he takes that boot off, got 2 months to do it. Get better Ford, we are already missing you in the water.
Recently met Fish in the desert at some party, he was all Fish in form and just the life of the party of course. He is kinda this surf celebrity that is more comedian than serious surfer, But Fisher rips and he is a nice dude. Gave him a copy of POLYESTER and he was phyched! Im a Fish fan, ronchy humor or any humor is always fun in a sometime serious surf industry. HEre is Fish as a working class man.
Fish surf shred Indo.
